Hiking Zion National Park

Zion National Park, Utah’s first National Park, is a testament to the power of nature and the importance of preservation. Long before it gained national recognition, Zion was home to the Ancestral Puebloans and Southern Paiutes, who left behind rock art and artifacts that reflect their deep connection to the land. In 1909, President Taft designated the area as Mukuntuweap National Monument, but it wasn’t until 1919 that it officially became Zion National Park, named after the biblical term for a place of refuge. This new name resonated with the locals and visitors alike, cementing Zion as a sanctuary for all who experience its towering cliffs and serene canyons.

This past summer, the Black Lantern team visited Zion, drawn by its iconic sandstone cliffs, sweeping vistas, and winding rivers. Hiking through the breathtaking landscapes and standing beneath the towering walls of Zion Canyon, we couldn’t help but feel the same awe that inspired early conservationists to protect this place over a century ago. That experience sparked the creation of our latest Zion National Park T-Shirt, designed to honor the park’s unique beauty with artwork that reflects its cliffs, desert flora, and the Virgin River carving through it all.

Zion’s history is a story of preservation and discovery. Originally a sacred place for Native Americans, its stunning scenery eventually captured the attention of early explorers, settlers, and artists. The push to protect Zion grew as more people experienced its grandeur, leading to its designation as a National Park. Today, Zion attracts millions of visitors each year, offering a place to hike, explore, and connect with the natural world in profound ways.

At Black Lantern, we believe in capturing the spirit of places like Zion through our nature-inspired apparel and glassware. This park’s history and beauty continue to fuel our creativity, allowing us to create designs that celebrate its wild landscapes.
